Oil Capital is idea for firearms sports, training, and competition. I’ve also discovered it to be perfect for amateur astronomy. It is a very short drive to dark skies; the rural flavor of OCRGC is welcoming and relaxing. It’s makes weeknight astronomy very enjoyable.

OCRGC is private with secure, controlled access.  It has nice bathrooms and cool drinks in the fridge. It is rural and peaceful.

I’ve enjoyed OCRGC for years as both a place to practice marksmanship as well as astronomy. The skies are sufficiently dark on clear nights and the location is just minutes from Broken Arrow.

I have a much darker site less than 8 miles west of Pawhuska, OK but it is a long drive.

There is virtually no point source light to be seen, just sky glow 35 degrees above the west horizon. The rest of the sky is dark enough to see many faint objects.

There are trees, a small lake, and and the inescapable sounds of wildlife.  Meanwhile, refuge in a temperature controlled clubhouse is just 75’ away.

It is a special place that feels far away but is actually just around the corner. It is just about perfect for a city dweller; it has made weeknight astronomy a reality.
